Career Profile - Financial Administrator
Devin Tomiski
Devin Tomiski is the man with the money. As a Financial Administrator, he is responsible for processing accounts receivables and payables for Hemp Oil Canada, a company which produces hemp food products and ingredients. He says his job gives him a unique perspective of the business world.
“Looking after the payables of a company gives you a pretty good idea of what is involved in running a successful business,” said Devin. “Whether it be meeting budgets, conversing with suppliers, or managing our Hemp-Producer’s seed pay-outs, as financial administrator I’m involved.”
Devin says a typical day for a Financial Administrator includes everything from processing payments, preparing reports, making deposits, and issuing cheques. “I like that it is never the same thing twice. Every day is different.”
For anyone proficient with numbers, a career in accounting is an ideal job. It demands a lot of responsibility and the ability to work accurately. In addition to holding a Bachelor of Arts in Sociology from the University of Manitoba, Devin is currently seeking his professional designation through the Certified Professional Accountants program.
Young students may not have much knowledge of this industry, but neither did Devin. He gravitated naturally to this career after graduation. His advice for students is to use university as an opportunity to figure out where their interests and talents lie. “I was able to decide what I wanted to do,” said Devin. “You don’t necessarily need to know what you want to do as a career at the age of 17. Just begin your journey and keep moving forward.”
